C.C.F.L Shield 1st Round
Tullamore Rovers 2, Portlaoise C 3.
Portlaoise C progressed to the next round of the C.C.F.L Shield with a narrow victory over Tullamore Rovers in a match that was played in atrocious conditions on Sunday morning. The wind and rain swept in throughout this cup tie making it tough for both teams. Tullamore Rovers got first blood ten minutes before the break when Mick Kilmartin crossed for Derek Dolan who swept the ball home to give the home side a deserved lead. The away side were back in the game five minutes into the second half when after a quick breakaway, goalkeeper Jimmy Keenehan and defender Jimmy O’Brien did their best to best to snuff out the attack but the forward squeezed the ball home from eight yards. Tullamore Rovers pilled on the pressure in the second half but the condition of the pitch began to deteriorate badly suiting neither team. JP O’Leary came close and Phil Evans seen his shot from thirty yards miss just to the left. More chances came Rovers way after Mark Kelly crossed for James Carty but he was unable to his shot away and Ronan Kelly had his drive from ten yards blocked following a corner. Midway through the second half Rovers regained the advantage. Billy Harvey broke out of defence but was fouled on his way toward goal. The resulting free kick was badly dealt with by the Portlaoise defence and the ball was headed home by Dolan for his second. Rovers held that advantage for fifteen minutes before they were caught out with a free kick after failing to play the offside trap effectively. Portlaoise found the wining goal five minutes before the end when another free kick swerved from left to right in the gusting wind before finding the back of the net. Defenders Deano Tyrell and Billy Harvey pushed forward for Rovers in the dying minutes in search of the equaliser but the home side ran out of time.

Tullamore Rovers came away with a point from this tough encounter with Timahoe side Round Tower Rovers but they will count themselves unlucky not to have picked up all three. The Tullamore based side employed new formation in the middle of the park and dominated for periods of the game with some neat football. The first half was a dogged affair with the home side content to sit back and absorb the pressure. Round Towers Rovers always looked dangerous on the break as the rovers players went in search of a goal but the Tullamore Rovers back line held tight throughout. John Cusack played well in at right back for and Jimmy O’Brien had a good game at centre back winning all his aerial battles with a very physical forward line. Tullamore Rovers had plenty of joy down the left and side thanks to the constant running of Mark Kelly who put in another fine performance. The second half seen Tullamore Rovers begin to put more pressure on the home side and a number of half chances came their way. JP’ Leary, Brendan Kenny, and Andy Dooner came close with efforts but the closest Rovers came to a goal was through Ronan Kelly who had a shot deflected off the post for a corner. The resulting corner caused a scramble in the Round Towers box put the away side couldn’t take advantage. Phil Evans and Derek Dolan pushed forward for Rovers throughout the second period as the Round Towers went on the back foot but they still looked dangerous on the break. The Rovers management team of Alan James and Mick Kilmartin brought on Billy Harvey, James Carty and Deano Tyrell in the second half to freshen things up as the game developed into a tough battle that was taking its toll on the players. The game eventually finished goalless, a good clean sheet for Rovers keeper Jimmy Keenehan and his defence. This was a tough and entertaining encounter that Rovers will take heart from as they continue their battle for points. The man of the match for Tullamore Rovers was Emmet O’Malley who had a great game at left back putting in some great tackles and offering plenty to the midfield going forward.

Heyward Celtic continued to impress in Division 3A and look like serious contenders for the title now after a home victory over Tullamore Rovers in Mountmellick in Sunday. Two fine strikes in the first half condemned the Tullamore side to defeat but they only have themselves to blame after a very sluggish opening 45 in which they were well off the pace. Rovers improved vastly in the second half and dominated as the home side retreated and a goal for Rovers would have made an entertaining finale. JP O’Leary, Derek Dolan and Ronan Kelly all had opportunities but the Rovers goal never came. Tullamore Rovers manager Alan James was disappointed with the result but took heart from the spirited sound half performance. Rovers had some good performers in the second half but the most impressive displays came from Mark Kelly in midfield and Billy Harvey in defence.

Killurin 1, Tullamore Rovers 4
Tullamore Rovers picked up their first win of the season away to Killurin at the weekend with a comprehensive 4 – 1 victory. After a poor start to the season the performances have been getting better for Rovers and this win was long overdue for the Tullamore side. James Carty was the star man for Rovers after he fired home his second hat trick of the campaign. His first goal arrived within the first 10 minutes after a rip roaring start by Rovers who went on the attack from the whistle. Carty took his first goal well after receiving cross from Andy Galvin, Carty controlled nicely just inside the box before finishing with a shot across the keeper into the far right corner. Rovers continued to attack from the restart with Phil Evans and Derek Dolan in the middle controlling things and using the space on the wings to good affect. Carty’s second goal came after Dolan latched onto the ball outside the box and pulled back for Carty who made no mistake with another neat finish to send Rovers two up after 20 minutes. Ten minutes later JP O’Leary was unlucky not to make it three after been sent through, his first touch was excellent as he bore down on goal but the Killurin defence did well on this occasion to avert the danger. Rovers were sensing a win at this stage but the players were well aware of how they threw away points from similar situations previously. That wasn’t to happen this time mainly due to a much improved defensive performance with Ed Finnerty and Billy Harvey doing very well as the centre back pairing. They were helped by Pat Meehan who had another solid game at left full and Andy Galvin who was once again impressive going forward, setting up a goal, and offering Rovers another attacking outlet. Rovers continued where they left off in the second half with some fine attacking football, Mark Kelly on the left of midfield was finding lots of room and he did well to put pressure on the Killurin defence whenever he had possession. Pat Tyrell was using his speed to great effect again with some great running on the right where he had the beating of the full back and looked dangerous whenever he went forward. Killurin did have a spell where they looked to be getting back in the game midway through the second half but two fantastic saves by Jimmy Keenehan kept Rovers in it during this important phase of the game. Keenehan was solid throughout the game for Rovers and he cleaned up everything around the box with confidence. Just as Killurin were starting to look like the might get a goal Rovers scored their third and it was James Carty again who fired home to complete his hat trick. Pat Tyrell sending him through this time before he beat the nearest defender and knocked the ball into the corner if the net. Mick Kilmartin and Michael Galvin were introduced for Rovers as manager Alan James looked to close out the victory; Kilmartin's running giving more problems for the Killurin defence to deal with. The home side did manage to get on the score sheet late on after a own goal but Michael Galvin put the game beyond doubt five minutes before the end when he picked up the ball on the edge of the box before firing low past the on coming keeper to seal a fine win for the Tullamore side. Rover’s manager Alan James was delighted with the result and will see this result as the kick start to the season that they needed. The player’s confidence will be lifted by the result and no doubt they will kick on from here to put in a good season.

Despite another good display Tullamore Rovers were beaten at home for the second consecutive week. Rovers have still to get off the mark this season and manager Alan James will be hoping the wins start coming soon. Rovers dominated this game but failed in two critical areas, sloppy defending and a lack of shots on target. Round Towers Rovers took the lead just before the break but the home side were straight back in the game immediately from the restart after robbing the ball in middle and setting Pat Tyrell on his way down the right. Tyrell crossed for JP O’Leary to back heel the ball past the keeper at the near post. Rovers became ragged throughout second half and despite having most of the possession they couldn’t find the killer passes up front. The inevitable happened with 5 minutes to go when the home side failed to clear their lines and Round Tower Rovers snatched the points with a late winner. Tullamore Rovers are now in desperate need of a win to kick start their season. Last minute goal rocks Rovers
Tullamore Rovers bad start to the new season continued on Sunday in Killeigh but the manner of the defeat was the most disappointing feature after a much improved performance by Rovers. This game was full of controversial incidents including two penalties and a sending off which changed the face of the game. Rover’s first half performance was excellent and they got off to a flying start when James Carty drove a splendid free kick into the top corner after 10 minutes. It was a just reward for the Rovers players who were playing some inventive football through the middle. Rovers went two in front midway through the first half when Andy Galvin, who was impressive throughout the game on the right hand side, put in a smashing cross for James Carty to nod home for his second. At this point Rovers were well on top and the Rovers defence were also snuffing out most Clonygowan attacks. The centre back pairing of Ed Finnerty and Billy Harvey were excellent trough the game with some tough and uncompromising tackling to keep the Clonygowan forwards at bay. However a bizarre moment on the stroke of half time gifted Clonygowan a way back into the game. Billy Harvey challenged for a ball on the edge of the box and was caught with a high kick from a Clonygowan forward, the players were involved in a scuffle and somehow a penalty to the away team was the end result. The penalty was put away and the sides went in at the break with Rovers leading 2 -1. Rovers picked up where they left off in the second half with Pat Tyrell in particular causing all sorts of trouble on the right wing, the Clonygowan full back had trouble dealing with his pace throughout the game. His brother Deano was operating in the middle of the park and had an excellent partnership going with Philip Evans that kept Rovers ticking over. Five minutes into the half it was a great through ball from the middle of the park that set JP O’Leary on his way toward goal , O’Leary was bearing down on goal only to be upended just has he was about to strike and the referee pointed straight to the spot. James Carty was the man who stepped up to the mark and smashed home for his hat trick. At this point Rovers were cruising and the full backs Pat Meehan and Andy Galvin were pushing on in support of the midfield as Rovers searched for another but the game changed midway through the second half for Rovers. A free kick was awarded outside the 18 yard box to Clonygowan. As the free was about to be taken Deano Tyrell was deemed to have encroached and was harshly awarded a second yellow card which signalled the end of his participation. It was long after before Clonygowan had got their second when the ball was fired home from close range despite the best effort of Pat Meehan and keeper Jimmy Keenehan to block it out. At this point Rovers manager Alan James introduced Jimmy O’Brien and Michael Connelly in an effort to keep Rovers fresh. But being a man down it was always going to be tough and the third goal came soon after when the Clonygowan forward picked up a spilled ball to fire home the equaliser. Ten minutes before the end Clonygowan went 4 – 3 up when a wicked deflection off Pat Meehan from a corner sailed beyond Jimmy Keenehan into the top of the net. Despite the goals Jimmy Keenehan can be glad of his performance as it could have been worse for Rovers after he pulled off two fantastic saves in either half. . With the game dwindling away at this stage Rover had to fight to get something out of it. The opportunity presented self with 10 minutes to go when Philip Evans fired in free kick from just inside the Rovers half for Derek Dolan to rise and head home an equaliser for Rovers. Rovers though they had done enough but there was one more twist in the game. The referee awarded a free down the right for Clonygowan, he allowed the indirect free to be taken without a whistle and Rovers were still asleep as the cross came in only to be met by a Clonygowan attacker who sent a loping heard into the top corner. This was a bitterly disappointing end to the game but Rovers will take heart from the performance and will look a some crucial decisions that denied them victory. This is a new Rovers team and there is no doubt of the talent in the squad but they are still in the process of gelling together as a unit.

Under-strength Rovers lose league opener
Clonaslee Utd 5, Tullamore Rovers 1.
A very under-strength Tullamore Rovers went down 5-1 to one of the league favourites Clonaslee Utd. With Rovers missing six first team players for this encounter it was always going to be an uphill struggle.
Being 4-0 down at half-time resulted in a number a substitutions being made. Rovers were a completely different team in the second half and played some great football but all was to late. A well worked goal for rovers, scored by new signing J.P O'Leary, showed just what rovers should be capable of on their day.
With a full strenght team expected for the first home game of the season against Cloneygowan hopefully Rovers will get a decent result.
Fingers crossed!!!

Tullamore Rovers Finish 3rd
Rovers Finish Third
Abbeyleix Athletic B 2, Tullamore Rovers 1.
Tullamore Rovers finished off the season with a defeat but they should have come away with all three points after their encounter with now Division 4A Champions Abbeyleix Athletic B. The Rovers players must have been still in bed for the first ten minutes of this encounter as the hosts managed to convert two early goals that should never had been. Despite that set back Rovers came more into the game as the half wore on with Pat Tyrell causing plenty of trouble on the right hand side. It was Pat Tyrell who got the Rovers goal twelve minutes before the break after he was fed through by Derek Dolan. Tyrell skipped by two defending and slotted past the out coming keeper from just inside the box. Rovers continued to press with Phil Evans dominating the middle and Mick Kilmartin pooping up on the left to create a number of good moves for the Tullamore side. It was the final killer pass that was missing form Rovers play that should have turned the possession into goals. The Tullamore lads continued to press through the second half despite the loss of Ronan Heffernan to injury. His replacement Mick Delany put in an excellent shift and caused havoc in the home team box every time the ball managed to reach him. His strike partner Brendan Kenny was also causing problems and was unlucky you to get on the score sheet when his shot, following a defensive mix up, was cleared off the line. Billy Harvey and John Healy joined the attacks as they tried desperately for an equalizer, this allowed Mick Kilmartin to move into more space and his running was a good feature of Rovers play as usual. Rovers had two good calls for a penalty tuned down after both Delaney and Dolan seemed to be pushed over in the box on separate occasions, considering it was the last game of the season the referee was happy to let such incidents go. As Rovers pressed it allowed Abbeyleix to hit them on the break and some good tracking from Jimmy O’Brien in the final 10 minutes denied Abbeyleix that all important third goal. Despite conceding twice Jimmy Keenahan recovered well in goal and he pulled off a great save as he scrambled to his left hand post ten minutes before the end to deny the home team. The Abbeyleix right winger was having a good battle with John Healy and Healy will be de delighted to have kept him quiet for most of the game. It was John Healy last game for Tullamore Rovers and he despite the result he will delighted with his performance as he managed to cut through the Abbeyleix team with two great runs late in the second half that were unlucky not to lead to a goal. At this stage manger Lar Byrne sent defender Ian Harvey up front to make a three man attack in attack in search of the elusive goal. Harvey did well but unfortunately time ran out for Rovers. A third place finish wasn’t a bad outcome for Rovers who had been promoted the previous year. They team will look back on some dropped pints earlier in the season as a couple more points would have gaurenteed promotion.
Tullamore Rovers would like o thank Joe Lees Bar on Church Street, De Bruns on Patrick St., Ted & Keith Garry for the pitch in Killeigh which was excellently maintained throughout the year. The management and team would like to thank John Healy for his contribution to the team over the past two years and wish him well in the future.
