O’Neill’s John Farrell Combined Counties Cup 2nd Round

Tullamore score four to send Clonown down

Clonown Rovers 3, Tullamore Rovers 4.

It was the Rovers of Tullamore that progressed into the next round of the Combined Counties Cup with a well deserved win over Division 3 side Clonown in Athlone on Sunday. The Tullamore side were two goals up after twenty minutes and it was no more than they deserved following an excellent opening quarter from the away side. Jarek Gazdecki got both the opening goals, his first was on ten minutes and his second was fired under the keeper on the 20 minute mark. Clonown managed to pull one back with a set piece that wasn’t properly dealt with by Tullamore but the two goal cushion was restored soon after. Tullamores third goal was scored by midfielder Philip Evans after he lobbed the keeper from thirty yards out after spotting him off his line. Clonown pulled another back in the second half with and excellent free kick that Rovers keeper Jimmy Keenehan could do little to stop. The away side refused to panic and hit their fourth goal after Jimmy O’Brien found Phil Evans in the middle, Evans played the ball to Gazdecki who found Mick Kilmartin racing through to beat the off side trap and rounded the Clonown keeper to finish with aplomb. With ten minutes to go Clonown got their third but Rovers had done enough by then to see them though. Manager Lar Byrne was delighted with his players and following two straight defeats this result was just to tonic to lift spirits again. The manager praised a great team effort and refused to single out any one player for plaudits. He did point out that the concession of three goals was disappointing but the collective efforts of the players to keep battling to the end were the decisive factor in victory. Rover’s players now have a break and training resumes on January 4th, a full turn out is expected for that session to work off the excesses of Christmas but mean time enjoy the break.
Tullamore Rovers: Jimmy Keenahan, Jimmy O’Brien, John Healy, Ian Harvey, Deano Tyrell, Billy Harvey, Jarek Gazdecki, Phil Evans, Paul McDonald, Brendan Kenny, Mick Kilmartin, Marcin Kaczmarczyk.
Happy Christmas to all the players, Joe Lees Bar on Church Street and the Garry family in Fentor Killeigh.

Tullamore Rovers dissapointingly went down by 4 goals to one against Mountmellick side Heyward Celtic. Brendan Kenny’s goal for Rovers was the only highlight for Tullamore who need to start picking up some victories to stay in contention for promotion. Paul McDonald was dismissed late in the game for a second yellow to add the Rovers misery.
