Rovers Shock Title Chasers

Ballybrittas 2, Tullamore Rovers 3.

The Tullamore Rovers players could be forgiven for losing interest in this campaign, Killurins resignation from the league meant that their two victors against them were void and scheduling of fixtures have ensured that this was only the Tullamore side’s third match in ten weeks. With Rovers season petering out they travelled to Ballybrittas to face a side with title winning aspirations but against all logic it was the Tullamore Rovers who put in a gutsy and determined performance that gave them a hard earned three points. To say it was a game of two very different halves would be something of an understatement as the stiff winds played big part in this game. Rovers won the toss and elected to play into the wind for the first half hoping to hold out until the break and press home any advantage later in the game. Things were going to plan in the first half and the Rovers defence were excelling under the direct approach from the home side. Michael Galvin who was making his first start at centre back for the Tullamore side was particularly impressive alongside the consistent performer Edwin Finnerty. They were supported by fullbacks Brendan Kenny and Pat Meehan who put in sterling performance through the first half considering the atrocious conditions. Up until the half hour mark things were going to plan for Rovers but an awkward long ball caused panic as it bounced in the box. The Ballybrittas forward backed into keeper Jimmy Keenan but play continued and the ball ended up in the back of the net to put the home side one up. Mick Kilmartin was unlucky not to get one back for Rovers has he used his pace to get behind the defence, he fired a low shot that the keeper did well to hold onto. Rovers would have been happy to go in at the break just a goal down knowing that with the wind behind them in the second half they had a decent chance of getting something but that chance was dealt a blow before the break. Another long punt from the middle found the Ballybrittas front man in acres space, he managed to slot the ball home and the goal stood despite some well entitled protests of offside from the Rovers players. Jimmy O’Brien who was managing Tullamore Rovers for the day rallied his troops at the interval and they responded with an excellent comeback. As the weather closed in with hailstones lashing the players Rovers began to exert pressure on the home side. Derek Dolan and Phil Evans were getting forward more from the middle and the introduction of Ronan Kelly added a bit more pace to the away side. JP O’Leary went closed soon after the restart, he spun of the last defender and was through on goal but the angle was too great on this occasion as he fired wide to the right. With fifty minutes gone Rovers got the goal they deserved. Ronan Kelly popped up on the right and seen his shot blocked only for John Cusack to lash the ball home from the rebound. Rover’s tails were up but only some fine goal keeping from Jimmy Keenahan at the other end during a quick break from the to the home side ensured the Rovers stayed in the game. Jimmy O’ Brien and Pat Tyrell came on for Rovers with twenty minutes to go and the fresh legs aided Rovers as they searched for goals. The equaliser came with ten minutes to go as Ronan Kelly again turned provider, this time it was Ed Finnerty who stroked the ball home confidently. The game seemed to be heading for a draw but with minutes remaining there was a grand finale, substitute Pat Tyrell provided a spectacular goal worthy of winning any game, he spotted the keeper off his line from twenty five yards and judged the wind to perfection to lob the ball in to the net. The goal sealed a huge morale boosting victory for Rovers who can look for forward to their remaining three games with a lot more confidence. The Tullamore side have a turbulent season but the obvious potential of their squad was shown today. If they manage to keep this bunch of players together there will certainly be more to look forward too next season. Two Sent Off As Carthy Header Gives Tullamore Rovers Victory

Killurin 3 Tullamore Rovers 4

TULLAMORE Rovers clinched only their second league win of the season as this CCFL Division 3A clash climaxed in dramatic fashion on Sunday.
Both sides have been struggling, hence their positions at the foot of the table, but they nonetheless served up an incident filled encounter in Killurin.
The home side, whose season has been hampered by local hurling success, took the lead when promising youngster Niall Kearns skilfully slipped the ball between two defenders and Kevin Keenaghan supplied the finish.
The first of _Tullamore Rovers star Derek Dolan's two goals levelled the game but Kearns put Killurin 2-1 up before the break, only for Dolan to square it up again.
Killurin hit the front for the third time when Keenaghan returned the favour to Kearns, setting the young player up for his second on this occasion.
Killurin then found themselves even again. Adrian Brazil was adjudged to have handled the ball by referee Tom Cunningham and James Carthy slotted the spot-kick home, making it 3-3.
Tullamore Rovers were reduced to 10 men with 17 minutes left when Edwin Finnerty was sent off for a second bookable offence.
But they recovered from that setback just five minutes later when Michael Kilmartin darted down the right and floated in a perfect cross which was headed expertly past stand-in 'keeper Jarlath Dunne by the rising Carthy from eight yards.
That seemed to be that, with time running out and Tullamore Rovers 4-3 up and seemingly on the verge of an unlikely victory.
However, the energetic Adrian Brazil nearly fashioned yet another shock equaliser when he attempted to charge down a clearance just minutes after Rovers' fourth goal.
Then the game delivered one more twist. Keenaghan was taken down by Rovers 'keeper Jimmy Kinahan just inside the box - the Tullamore Rovers defence had played a dangerous offside ploy which did not come off.
A penalty was awarded and Andy Brazil advanced to the spot to take it.
Just as he was about to take his kick, an opposing player shouted 'It's going over!' and sure enough, Brazil blazed his penalty over the bar to whoops from the relieved Rovers men.
An aggrieved Adrian Brazil asked that the spot-kick be retaken - apparently because he believed the 'It's going over!' shout amounted to ungentlemanly conduct - but was waved away by referee Cunningham.
When Brazil persisted in his argument for a retake, he was shown the red card by the official.
The final whistle sounded just seconds after that incident and Tullamore Rovers celebrated a rare win which boosts their slim hopes of avoiding relegation.

C.C.F.L Shield 1st Round

Tullamore Rovers 2, Portlaoise C 3.

Portlaoise C progressed to the next round of the C.C.F.L Shield with a narrow victory over Tullamore Rovers in a match that was played in atrocious conditions on Sunday morning. The wind and rain swept in throughout this cup tie making it tough for both teams. Tullamore Rovers got first blood ten minutes before the break when Mick Kilmartin crossed for Derek Dolan who swept the ball home to give the home side a deserved lead. The away side were back in the game five minutes into the second half when after a quick breakaway, goalkeeper Jimmy Keenehan and defender Jimmy O’Brien did their best to best to snuff out the attack but the forward squeezed the ball home from eight yards. Tullamore Rovers pilled on the pressure in the second half but the condition of the pitch began to deteriorate badly suiting neither team. JP O’Leary came close and Phil Evans seen his shot from thirty yards miss just to the left. More chances came Rovers way after Mark Kelly crossed for James Carty but he was unable to his shot away and Ronan Kelly had his drive from ten yards blocked following a corner. Midway through the second half Rovers regained the advantage. Billy Harvey broke out of defence but was fouled on his way toward goal. The resulting free kick was badly dealt with by the Portlaoise defence and the ball was headed home by Dolan for his second. Rovers held that advantage for fifteen minutes before they were caught out with a free kick after failing to play the offside trap effectively. Portlaoise found the wining goal five minutes before the end when another free kick swerved from left to right in the gusting wind before finding the back of the net. Defenders Deano Tyrell and Billy Harvey pushed forward for Rovers in the dying minutes in search of the equaliser but the home side ran out of time.

Tullamore Rovers came away with a point from this tough encounter with Timahoe side Round Tower Rovers but they will count themselves unlucky not to have picked up all three. The Tullamore based side employed new formation in the middle of the park and dominated for periods of the game with some neat football. The first half was a dogged affair with the home side content to sit back and absorb the pressure. Round Towers Rovers always looked dangerous on the break as the rovers players went in search of a goal but the Tullamore Rovers back line held tight throughout. John Cusack played well in at right back for and Jimmy O’Brien had a good game at centre back winning all his aerial battles with a very physical forward line. Tullamore Rovers had plenty of joy down the left and side thanks to the constant running of Mark Kelly who put in another fine performance. The second half seen Tullamore Rovers begin to put more pressure on the home side and a number of half chances came their way. JP’ Leary, Brendan Kenny, and Andy Dooner came close with efforts but the closest Rovers came to a goal was through Ronan Kelly who had a shot deflected off the post for a corner. The resulting corner caused a scramble in the Round Towers box put the away side couldn’t take advantage. Phil Evans and Derek Dolan pushed forward for Rovers throughout the second period as the Round Towers went on the back foot but they still looked dangerous on the break. The Rovers management team of Alan James and Mick Kilmartin brought on Billy Harvey, James Carty and Deano Tyrell in the second half to freshen things up as the game developed into a tough battle that was taking its toll on the players. The game eventually finished goalless, a good clean sheet for Rovers keeper Jimmy Keenehan and his defence. This was a tough and entertaining encounter that Rovers will take heart from as they continue their battle for points. The man of the match for Tullamore Rovers was Emmet O’Malley who had a great game at left back putting in some great tackles and offering plenty to the midfield going forward.
