Tullamore Rovers turned in a disappointing performance in the CCFL shield against Clonown of Division 3. Rovers only goal was scored for Jarek Gazdecki before he was taken off with a hamstring injury.

Magic Jarek Hits a Hat Trick

Tullamore Rovers 3, Walsh Island Shamrocks 0.

Jarek Gazdecki fired home a fantastic hat trick for Tullamore Rovers to dump Walsh Island Shamrocks out of the O’Neill’s John Farrell CCFL Cup 1st Round in Killeigh on Sunday. The pitch in Fentor, Killeigh, looked in great condition and with the autumn sunshine beaming down Rovers put in a great performance that will see them go into the hat for the next round draw. Rovers’ first goal came on 15 minutes courtesy of a through ball from Derek Dolan on the left, Gazdecki turned on the edge of the box and left the defenders trailing before firing low into the bottom right. Ten minutes later he was at it again, this time Paul McDonald was the provider with a ball over the top and Gazdecki turned in a similar fashion to the first and went low again to beat the Walsh Island goalkeeper and give Rovers the second goal cushion. With Phil Evans and Paul McDonald getting plenty of ball in the middle the Tullamore side were carving through the Walsh Island defence with ease although the offside trap was catching the forwards and on another day they would have been in for a few more goals. Towards the end of the first half Walsh Island did raise their game and the last 10 minute before the break seen them win a succession of corners in a sustained period of pressure on the Rovers goal. The pressure didn’t pay off as some superb defending from the Rovers back four of Billy Harvey, Deano Tyrell, Jimmy O’Brien and John Healy ensured Rovers held onto the clean sheet. The second half was better again from Rovers and any attacks for the away side were sporadic. Brendan Kenny was unlucky not to get on the score sheet as his running along the box caused problems and perhaps he could have been played in by Gazdecki on a couple of occasions that could have led to a goal for the striker. Walsh Island did manage to force a few corners midway through the half but Jimmy Kinahan in the Tullamore goal had another great game and was excellent throughout. Ian Harvey on the rightwing was finding plenty more space in the second half and he did well with a number of great crosses that were unlucky not to be converted. The third Gazdecki goal came midway through the half to effectively kill off the game for the home side. A mistake in the Walsh Island defence was punished Gazdecki skipped into the box to rifle home his third into the far corner beyond the despairing dive of the Walsh Island stopper. With twenty minutes to go Lar Byrne the Rovers manager introduced Robbie Lawler, Ronan Heffernan and Czestaw Madalinski and all three did brilliantly to maintain the pressure on the Walsh Island goal. Ian Harvey had a shot late on that narrowly went over and that was to be the last serious action of the game. A pleasing result for the management team of Lar Byrne and Clive Evans and they will be hoping for more of the same next week in the CCFL Shield against Clonown Rovers in Athlone.
Tullamore Rovers: Jimmy Kinahan, Billy Harvey, Deano Tyrell, Jimmy O’Brien, John Healy, Derek Dolan, Ian Harvey, Paul McDonald, Phil Evans, Jarek Gazdecki, Brendan Kenny, Robbie Lawlor, Ronan Heffernan, Czestaw Madalinski, Pawet Polak..
