Tullamore Rovers 1, Abbeyleix Athletic B 2.
Tullamore Rovers went down to fellow promotion contenders Abbeyleix in an entertaining game in Killeigh on Sunday. Rovers were excellent in the first half and looked to be on their way to a victory when Jarek Gazdecki latched onto a breaking ball in the box to fire home from ten yards midway through the first half. Rover’s failure to add to the lead was their downfall and a more spirited Abbeyleix team emerged for the second half and scored within two minutes of the restart. The goal knocked Rovers confidence and ten minutes later the home side went to sleep again to let in Abbeyleix for a second goal. Both Abbeyleix goals came within and fifteen minute spell and that was the only period of dominance the away side had, the difference between the sides was that Abbeyleix took advantage of their dominance while despite Rovers taking control of the game again midway through second half they failed to find any clear cut chances. The result puts a dent in the Tullamore sides promotion hopes but they are by no means out of the hunt and a victory against Clonalsee C at home next Sunday will keep them fighting.

TRASHED - Out of the John Farrell Cup
Melville United 6, Tullamore Rovers 0.
Well, what can ya say? It's hard to say anything good about this mauling, fair enough we are Division 4 and they are division 1, and we played the second half with only ten men. Yep, ten men against a Division 1 side as only the bear 11 actually bothered their holes to turn up. Add the lack of numbers at training to this and it wasn't exactly good preparation to face such a good side so let’s hope its serves as a wake up call. Nuff said about this one, consigned to the history books.

Tullamore Rovers kept the pressure on at the top of the table with a hard fourth victory in Portlaoise. The win proved to be even more vital as news came through that table topper Heyward Celtic had lost to Clonaslee C. This now means that Rovers are 4 points away from top spot with a game in hand. Rover’s resilience was tested to the limit in this game as they were forced to play the final 15 minutes without team captain Deano Tyrell who was sent off harshly for two supposed late tackles, there was debate at whether the first should have even been deemed a free kick. It was unfortunate for Tyrell who was a having a great game at the centre of defence with man of the match Ian Harvey who barely but a foot wrong. The first half was very tight with very little room and a lack of any clear cut chances at both ends. The closest Rovers came to breaking the deadlock was a free kick from Ian Harvey that clipped the top of the cross bar while at the other end Portlaoise had one good chance but the centre forward skewed his shot wide form 10 yards. Brendan Kenny and Mick Kilmartin lead Rovers and were full of running and did well with the few quality balls they did receive. Phil Evans and Paul McDonald were strong in the midfield and both were particularly dominant in the air through the game. Clive Evans took the chance at half time to shake up the Rovers formation and went all out for the win pushing Brendan Kenny up front and switching Derek Dolan to the left wing. Rovers certainly were more attack minded in the second half and were beginning to look dangerous on the break with Pat Tyrell causing plenty of problems on the right with his surging runs. Rovers could have took the lead on 60 minutes when Billy Harvey was desperately unlucky to see his shot from just inside the box miss to the right, a goal for Billy would have toped and impressive performance. On the right John Healy and Derek Dolan were linking up well and did well defensively once Rovers went down to 10 men. The game changed with the sending off as Rovers ironically began to play their best football. Jimmy O’Brien was introduced to sure up the defence and he did brilliantly under allot of pressure during the last 15 minutes. Rovers used the loss of the man to their advantage as they sat back and began to work the ball out on quick counters attacks. The runs of Pat Tyrell on the right lead to a number of corners that kept the ball in the Portlaoise half. The goal came 10 minutes from time when Paul McDonald fired in the cross that deceived the goalkeeper and went straight into the Portlaoise goal. From that moment on Tullamore worked tirelessly getting tackles in and moving the ball out quick to ensure another vital three points in their title challenge. Rovers can also thank their keeper Jimmy Keenehan who was fantastic throughout the second have making two great saves, one from a one on one with the Portlaoise centre forward. That’s two clean sheets on the trot for Keenehan and Tullamore Rovers. Rovers are away in the cup next Sunday to Division 1 opposition Melville Utd. in Athlone.

Rovers Hit Four
Raheen 0, Tullamore Rovers 4.
The restart of the league campaign after the Christmas break is always tough but add wind, rain and a heavy pitch and things are even tougher. Tullamore Rovers managed to overcome the elements away to Raheen on Sunday to record an impressive victory that keeps them in the hunt at the top of the table. Rovers started very brightly with some good football considering the conditions and took the lead on five minutes after winning a free on the edge of the box. Paul McDonald struck the resulting free which wasn’t dealt with by the keeper who managed to fumble the ball behind the line to give Rovers the lead. Rovers probed continually through the first half looking for a second but their best efforts came from long range with the Raheen keeper not being tested apart from one good save to deny McDonald from another free kick. The Rovers defence looked very comfortable throughout the game with Jimmy O’Brien and Deano Tyrell in great form the centre. Both central defenders kept their concentration throughout and denied the home team any clear cut opportunities. Billy Harvey was in the thick of the action as usual and he stopped anything coming down the right as well as offering support to Brendan Kenny going forward. John Healy was equally impressive on the left and made some good runs from the defence during the first half. The second half was much better for Rovers in attack as the midfield ventured forward with more purpose and following a good move down the right Mick Kilmartin fired in a cross that Jarek Gazdecki struck home with a diving header from the centre of the box. Rovers continued to press forward but were tested at the back also, twice the home side won free kicks in dangerous positions but some excellent goalkeeping on both occasions by Jimmy Keenahan kept the clean sheet. John Healy went close for Rovers with an excellent lopping shot the just dipped over the bar and Phil Evans had a long range effort the just missed to the left. Evans was at the centre of things again moments later as he started a move in the middle that ended up with Gazdecki firing home his second from the right hand side with a low drive in to the back of the net. Straight from the restart the game was finished off and Derek Dolan hit a long ball into the corner for Gazdecki to chase after. He won a free kick just on the edge of the box on the right hand side. Mick Kilmartin stepped up to take it and he rifled a powerful shot that deflected off the Raheen defender and straight into the net to seal and comprehensive victory for the Tullamore side. Lar Byrne’s side are still in with a good chance of promotion if they keep up this form but they will have to work hard as rivals Heyward Celtic picked up another victory to keep them top of the table. Next up for Tullamore Rovers is a home game against Abbeyliex Athletic next Sunday.

Tullamore score four to send Clonown down
Clonown Rovers 3, Tullamore Rovers 4.
It was the Rovers of Tullamore that progressed into the next round of the Combined Counties Cup with a well deserved win over Division 3 side Clonown in Athlone on Sunday. The Tullamore side were two goals up after twenty minutes and it was no more than they deserved following an excellent opening quarter from the away side. Jarek Gazdecki got both the opening goals, his first was on ten minutes and his second was fired under the keeper on the 20 minute mark. Clonown managed to pull one back with a set piece that wasn’t properly dealt with by Tullamore but the two goal cushion was restored soon after. Tullamores third goal was scored by midfielder Philip Evans after he lobbed the keeper from thirty yards out after spotting him off his line. Clonown pulled another back in the second half with and excellent free kick that Rovers keeper Jimmy Keenehan could do little to stop. The away side refused to panic and hit their fourth goal after Jimmy O’Brien found Phil Evans in the middle, Evans played the ball to Gazdecki who found Mick Kilmartin racing through to beat the off side trap and rounded the Clonown keeper to finish with aplomb. With ten minutes to go Clonown got their third but Rovers had done enough by then to see them though. Manager Lar Byrne was delighted with his players and following two straight defeats this result was just to tonic to lift spirits again. The manager praised a great team effort and refused to single out any one player for plaudits. He did point out that the concession of three goals was disappointing but the collective efforts of the players to keep battling to the end were the decisive factor in victory. Rover’s players now have a break and training resumes on January 4th, a full turn out is expected for that session to work off the excesses of Christmas but mean time enjoy the break.

Magic Jarek Hits a Hat Trick
Tullamore Rovers 3, Walsh Island Shamrocks 0.
Jarek Gazdecki fired home a fantastic hat trick for Tullamore Rovers to dump Walsh Island Shamrocks out of the O’Neill’s John Farrell CCFL Cup 1st Round in Killeigh on Sunday. The pitch in Fentor, Killeigh, looked in great condition and with the autumn sunshine beaming down Rovers put in a great performance that will see them go into the hat for the next round draw. Rovers’ first goal came on 15 minutes courtesy of a through ball from Derek Dolan on the left, Gazdecki turned on the edge of the box and left the defenders trailing before firing low into the bottom right. Ten minutes later he was at it again, this time Paul McDonald was the provider with a ball over the top and Gazdecki turned in a similar fashion to the first and went low again to beat the Walsh Island goalkeeper and give Rovers the second goal cushion. With Phil Evans and Paul McDonald getting plenty of ball in the middle the Tullamore side were carving through the Walsh Island defence with ease although the offside trap was catching the forwards and on another day they would have been in for a few more goals. Towards the end of the first half Walsh Island did raise their game and the last 10 minute before the break seen them win a succession of corners in a sustained period of pressure on the Rovers goal. The pressure didn’t pay off as some superb defending from the Rovers back four of Billy Harvey, Deano Tyrell, Jimmy O’Brien and John Healy ensured Rovers held onto the clean sheet. The second half was better again from Rovers and any attacks for the away side were sporadic. Brendan Kenny was unlucky not to get on the score sheet as his running along the box caused problems and perhaps he could have been played in by Gazdecki on a couple of occasions that could have led to a goal for the striker. Walsh Island did manage to force a few corners midway through the half but Jimmy Kinahan in the Tullamore goal had another great game and was excellent throughout. Ian Harvey on the rightwing was finding plenty more space in the second half and he did well with a number of great crosses that were unlucky not to be converted. The third Gazdecki goal came midway through the half to effectively kill off the game for the home side. A mistake in the Walsh Island defence was punished Gazdecki skipped into the box to rifle home his third into the far corner beyond the despairing dive of the Walsh Island stopper. With twenty minutes to go Lar Byrne the Rovers manager introduced Robbie Lawler, Ronan Heffernan and Czestaw Madalinski and all three did brilliantly to maintain the pressure on the Walsh Island goal. Ian Harvey had a shot late on that narrowly went over and that was to be the last serious action of the game. A pleasing result for the management team of Lar Byrne and Clive Evans and they will be hoping for more of the same next week in the CCFL Shield against Clonown Rovers in Athlone.

Cosgrove Keeps Rovers in the hunt
Tullamore travelled to Timahoe in Laois on Sunday morning on the back of a great win over table toppers Clonminan Rovers the previous Sunday. A win could have put Rovers top but they were forced to come away with a share of the spoils after an entertaining encounter. The match for many parts was played at fast pace with the Timahoe forwards intent on using their pace to get behind the Tullamore defence. The first 20 minutes of the game seen the Timahoe side edge things but once Tullamore to hold of the game they seen out the half much stronger. The Round Towers forwards were showing some good touches throughout the opening quarter and they were intent on getting behind the Tullamore defence with their speed but Ian Harvey and Jimmy O’Brien were up to challenge managed to shackle the home team to just long range efforts. But on the half hour mark Round Tower took the lead after a through ball caught Rovers and the Round Tower forward gave Jimmy Keenan in the Tullamore goal no chance with a cool finish. Tullamore responded well and started to string passes together much better as the first half closed out. Phil Evans was starting to see more of the ball and he was using possession wisely looking for that killer pass behind the Round Towers defence. With ten minutes to go before the break Brendan Kenny was unlucky not to score he turned well in the box after receiving the ball form the right a his powerful shot was pub behind by the keeper. Moments later Gazdecki fired in a cross from the right a Derek Dolan had his head well saved by the Round Tower keeper who was having a fine game. Harvey found himself the last line of defence on a couple of occasion but he came up trumps with an excellent display of tackling and some very timely interventions. On the other side of defence John Healy must be commended for his last ditch tackle near the end to keep the scores level.
Tullamore Rovers Topple Table Toppers
Tullamore Rovers 4 Clonminam Rovers 2 TULLAMORE Rovers toppled table toppers Clonminam Rovers with a super second half performance in Killeigh on Sunday. Two places behind Clonminam before the morning's action, Tullamore leapfrogged their Laois opponents thanks to two- goal hero Jarek Gozdecki. The visiting Rovers took the lead when Niall Wheeler set up a goal for Richie Reid but following a hand-ball by Alan Loughlin, Tullamore Rovers won the free which eventually led to Paul McDonald hitting the equaliser before half-time. In the second half, Clonminam Rovers made two changes up front in a bid to stamp their authority on the game and though one of the substitutes, Mark Kirwan, looked threatening, Tullamore Rovers began to create some chances.
First Brendan Kenny forced opposing 'keeper Shane Nolan to make a save just under the crossbar with a header, and then Phil Evans set up McDonald, but he was thwarted by Nolan who came out smartly.
In the 59th minute, McDonald worked his way into the box on the right, considered taking a shot himself but wisely cut the ball back for Gozdecki who hit the net from eight yards. That lead goal was cancelled out within five minutes. Mark Kirwan, a useful second half substitute for the visitors, was released by Paul Gaynor and though home 'keeper Jimmy Keenahan - in for regular netminder David Minton who was sidelined with a surfing injury - advanced, the sub kept control of the ball and followed up to push the leveller into an empty net. Gozdecki was only denied another goal by a great save from Nolan in the 65th minute and the game then began to swing in Clonminam's favour as they forced corner after corner. The home defence stood firm however, and there was always a chance that Tullamore Rovers would conjure a third goal, especially with Evans and Gozdecki playing so well. With 15 minutes left that pair combined for the crucial goal. Evans darted down the left and crossed for Gozdecki to finish unmarked at the far post. Nolan then had to be at his best to deny Ian Harvey whose excellent free-kick forced a fingertip save seven minutes from time.
With three minutes left the Tullamore side made sure of all three points when Gozdecki was awarded a free and when it was booted skyward in the six-yard box, Brian Cosgrove rose highest to head the ball home under the bar. The result puts Tullamore Rovers in second place in the table, just a point behind new leaders Abbeyleix Athletic.

Last Minute Goal Denies Rovers Victory
Midlands Celtic 2, Tullamore Rovers 2.
Tullamore Rovers were unlucky not to pick up all three points on Sunday against Portlaoise side Midlands Celtic. Rovers conceded a last minute goal to deny them an important three points in the hunt for promotion. Rovers fell behind early to a dubious penalty decision after two minutes, Rovers keeper Jimmy Keenan was unlucky not to keep out the resulting spot kick. The Tullamore side did well to get back into the game and got a lucky break after Ian Harvey’s long rage effort deceived the Celtic keeper and made its way into the net. Ian Harvey was filling in at left full and will be delighted to get off the mark with his first goal of the season. The right back position was filled by Billy Harvey who had a good solid game in defence yet again. Jimmy O’Brien and Captain Deano Tyrell teamed up in the centre of defence and looked solid and composed under pressure. Deano Tyrell had a busy game organising his defence and Jimmy O’Brien did well making one great last ditch tackle to save Rovers in the first half. Ten minutes before the break Rovers deservedly went in front after Phil Evans from right midfield found Brendan Kenny free in the box with a great cross, Kenny made no mistake slotting the ball past the Celtic keeper for his forth goal of the season. Paul McDonald went close with a long range effort soon after and Derek Dolan broke free done the left on a few occasions to trouble the Celtic defence and was unlucky with one effort toward the end of the half. In the last attach of the half Dolan was broth down on the edge of the box; Ian Harvey stood up to take the kick and was denied his second by and excellent save by the keeper. The second half was tougher for the Rovers players as they began to sit back. Brian Cosgroves aerial ability helped Rovers greatly in the second half as he defended corners with authority and was commanding in the middle of the park. Rovers had opportunities to increase their lead in the throughout the half with great running from Declan Conroy who tried to catch the home team on the counter attack. He was unlucky not to get on the score sheet and Kenny could have had his second midway through the half also. Rovers plugged away until the end and three minutes into stoppage time disaster struck as the Celtic broke free done the right and the centre forward broke into the box to fire home the equaliser in the dying seconds of the game. It was tough luck on Rovers who have now drawn three of their last four games. Their next match is at home to Clonminan Rovers who are flying high in the league and Tullamore will have to be on top form if there are to get a much needed victory over the Portlaoise side. Lar Byrne will no doubt be looking forward to the game and getting his players back to wining ways as soon as possible.
Tullamore Rovers: Jimmy Keenan, Billy Harvey, Ian Harvey, Jimmy O’Brien, Deano Tyrell, Phil Evans, Paul McDonald, Brian Cosgrove, Derek Dolan, Declan Conroy, Brendan Kenny.
